Fall 2010

English

Teacher: Dr. Brannon Hancock

We are offering an English class on the district this fall.  This will be taught by Dr. Brannon Hancock, who has a BA in English and a Masters in Literature and Theology.  The class will meet at the district office on the following dates:
Mondays 6:15-9:30 on Sept. 13, 20, 27, Oct. 4, and then Saturday, Oct 9 from 9am-4pm.

Since this is an abbreviated class, the tuition will be $100.  The required text is The Elements of Style, by William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White (1999 4th ed. or later) –$10 or so on Amazon.

Prerequisite assignment: by Friday Sept. 10 at midnight, submit to the instructor (brannon.hancock@gmail.com) a formal essay of at least 3 pages (12 pt Times New Roman font, double-spaced, 1" margins) responding to this question: "What sets the Church of the Nazarene apart from any other Christian church, and why is this important?"  To maximize the effectiveness of the class, this must be turned in by the due date so that the instructor can assess the writing abilities of the students and tailor the course to these particular needs.

Topics covered will include:
How to write good sentences (grammar refresher)
Reading and Thinking Critically
Evaluating academic sources (incl. online sources)
Citing sources and avoiding plagiarism
Writing for the local church (bulletins, newsletters, websites, etc)

One assignment to be completed BEFORE the first class: Mobilize a group from your church to attend the SWO Kids Against Hunger Factory on October 2. Come to the first class prepared to talk about this experience from the time you present it to others, to preparing people for the service, to the event itself and finally describing the impact it had on your group. Be sure to get feedback from your group.
